Grant Number: 2R44RR12279-02 PI Name: HANG, JIM PI Title: Chairman & CEO Project Title: CONFOCAL SCANNING MICROLASER/DETECTOR MICROSCOPE Abstract: New Dimension Research Inc. (NDR) proposes to develop an innovative portable confocal scanning laser microscope (PCSM) by using matrix-addressable laser/detector array chip (MALD). The device, which can be incorporated into a laptop computer or digital camera, has a novel matrix-addressable infrared vertical-cavity-surface-emitting-laser (VCSEL)/detector array chip as confocal scanning laser source, and a confocal pin hole like detector to maintain confocality. Sequentially turning on and off the laser/detector pair at each matrix cell produces a high-contrast confocal image. Unlike any conventional confocal laser scanning microscope, this instrument has no moving parts or bulky optics. We believe its low cost, portability and fast image acquisition make it ideal for biological research, and diagnoses of cancers and diseases. Currently there is no fast-imaging instrumentation that is compact and deployable in clinical or research laboratories. This system provides an efficient, high-throughput method for the real-time cell imaging necessary to reap the benefits of the ongoing biomedical revolution. The objective of this research is to further the development of the technology demonstrated in the Phase I for confocal scanning imaging by using two-dimensional micro-laser/detector array and to address the necessary technical insures required for Phase III commercialization and production of two-dimensional matrix-addressable laser/detector array with control circuits, bilens and accessory electronics. The results obtained in Phase I have demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing our novel laser/detector array and bilens optics for the confocal imaging. The goal of the Phase II is to demonstrate the laser 128X128 confocal imaging can be obtained by using a 128X128 matrix-addressable laser/detector array, and the optical-sectional imaging of the biological tissue, and a prototype of portable microscope.
