Project Title: ULTRA UNIFORM TEMPERATURE PCR THERMAL CYCLER

Abstract: The principal goal of Phase I is to demonstrate the feasibility of developing, and eventually bringing to market, an ultra-uniform temperature, fast thermal response 96-well thermal block for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) thermal cyclers. Unlike conventional thermal blocks, ours will embed a material ( TPG graphite) of very high thermal conductivity. We will also replace the ceramic of the thermoelectric cooler with TPG graphite and embed TPG into the heating sink. In this way we can make a fast thermal cycler with uniformed temperature distribution and fast thermal response. Because of the high thermal conductivity of the new material, thermal energy will be easily put in and taken out of the thermal block and the Peltier. Size of both heat sink and power source can be reduced dramatically. It will be possible to make a portable and battery-operated PCR thermal cycler. We believe that this novel method will increase gene sequence throughput and accuracy, and decrease cost.
